LAKE TRAVIS PROGRESSIVES SUPPORT ACA CANDLELIGHT VIGILS
ACA vote prompts statewide groups into action – Lake Travis Progressives Supports Local Vigil

Lakeway, Texas-- March 22, 2017- In an unprecedented display of solidarity, Indivisible groups from across Central Texas, including Austin, Western Travis County, Williamson County, and Hays County, will band together at dusk for candlelight vigils to support saving the Affordable Care Act. Community members chose to organize several of these vigils at the places where most uninsured Texans get their care: hospitals. In Lake Travis, the Lake Travis Progressives will be out in force to support the local ACA rally organized by their indivisible brothers and sisters.

“We join Indivisible groups from across the state on Wednesday evening to send a very clear and desperate message in advance of the planned House vote on Thursday to repeal the ACA. Our message is simple! SAVE OUR HEALTHCARE, VOTE NO!” said Stephanie Fitzharris, Founder of TX25 Indivisible We Stand, a grassroots chapter of Indivisible that is organizing concerned constituents into groups throughout Congressional District 25.

Lisa Goodgame, President of Indivisible Austin, who is organizing the citywide vigil at Brackenridge Hospital said, “This is a do-or-die moment for the ACA. Exactly seven years to the day of the Affordable Care Act becoming law, the House of Representatives will be voting to repeal it and replace it with Trumpcare—a plan that would lead to 24 million Americans losing their health care, and dramatically increase the number of Texan without insurance.”

More than 230,000 Texans in the Austin-area congressional districts are projected to lose their health insurance under the Republican plan, which gives a $600 billion tax break to the wealthiest Americans and corporations. This plan is especially harmful to children, as it cuts 25 percent of the Medicaid budget (45 percent of Texas kids get insurance through Medicaid and CHIP), and to older Texans, whose premium costs will skyrocket.

Locations and times for the community vigils are below. Western ATX Vigil: 7:30-9 pm, Baylor Scott & White – Lakeway, 100 Medical Parkway, Lakeway, Texas
