Valerie’s career as an accountant began in New York City. In 2003, shortly after graduating from Hunter College (CUNY) with BS in Accounting, she began working in a CPA firm called Altman Greenfield & Selvaggi, which specializes in business management for the entertainment industry. Some of her clients were interested in forming charitable organizations, which is how she was introduced to non-for-profit accounting. Valerie was fully responsible for the accounting and tax filing of the organizations such as Children of Nowhere, which was formed to help children with HIV and AIDS, and DNA Foundation (n/k/a Thorn: Digital Defenders of Children), which is an international anti-human trafficking organization.
In 2013, she and her husband moved to Austin as they were expecting their first child. After taking a year off from work, Valerie obtained her Texas CPA license and set up her own accounting practice. She feels fortunate to continue the work she enjoys and have the flexibility to be with her children. Valerie is happy to serve on the LT Progressives Board and finds it to be a great pleasure to work with like-minded people, as well as an honor to serve an organization that so strongly promotes equality and progressive thought.
